OCI Card India: Documents, Eligibility & Requirements
OCI card explained in simple terms—eligibility, document checklist, photo/sign rules, and common errors. Private guidance only.
1. OCI Card Eligibility and Requirements
The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card is the most powerful document for individuals of Indian origin who have acquired foreign citizenship (such as US or Canadian citizenship). It grants lifelong multi-entry, multi-purpose visa-free travel to India, alongside parity with NRIs in financial, economic, and educational fields.
2. Primary Eligibility Categories
You can apply for OCI if you meet any of the following criteria:
- You were a citizen of India on or after January 26, 1950.
- You belonged to a territory that became part of India after August 15, 1947.
- You are the child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of such a citizen.
- You are the foreign-origin spouse of a citizen of India or an OCI cardholder, and your marriage has been registered and subsisted for a continuous period of not less than two years.
3. The Essential Document Stack
Applying for OCI is notorious for document rejections. Prepare these exact items:
- Proof of Present Citizenship: Copy of your US or Canadian Passport.
- Evidence of Indian Origin: Your cancelled Indian Passport, Nativity Certificate, or Domicile Certificate.
- Surrender Certificate: Mandatory if you ever held an Indian passport.
- Digital Photo & Signature: The most common reason for rejection. VFS/BLS requires a strict 2x2 inch digital photo with a white background, under 500kb. Check our photo correction guide for the exact specifications.
4. Navigating the Application Platform
The application is a two-part process. First, complete the Part A and Part B forms on the official Indian Government OCI portal. Be extremely careful with spelling—your name must match your current foreign passport exactly. Any mismatch requires massive legal documentation, such as a Name Change Affidavit. Secondly, take the generated Web File Number and register on the VFS Global (USA) or BLS (Canada) portal to pay fees and generate shipping labels.
